Theme: “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent Van Gogh

The Museum of the Southwest’s 2018 On the Rise: Student Art Exhibition will focus on the theme “Tiny Art: Miniature Works with Big Ideas.” Students are encouraged to create high-quality works in small scale in any medium. All works of art must be between 4”x4” and 10”x10”.

Students may submit individual works of art or can work together to create a larger work out of their individual pieces. The sky is the limit with your tiny work of art!

Eligibility for the 2018 On the Rise: Student Art Exhibition

  • Any student in Kindergarten through Twelfth grade is eligible to submit work for the exhibition. See eligibility details below:
  • Submissions must be dropped off at the Museum of the Southwest on or before Monday, March 5, 2018.
  • Only one entry per student
  • Entries may be in the form of two or three-dimensional works of art. A black mat is required for 2D artwork and no works may be framed. All artworks must measure between 4”x4” and 10”x10”, not including the mat.
  • Entries should be submitted by the student’s fine art teacher, private teacher, homeroom teacher or guardian.
  • There is no limit on the number of students a teacher may enter into the exhibition.

Selection Process and Notification Information

A panel of jurors will make the final selections for the exhibition. Works will be selected on the basis of quality, originality and the artist’s use of the theme. An artist’s statement can be included with the application to allow jurors to more fully understand the work of art and its place within the theme. Artist statements are not required but appreciated. Teachers of selected students will be notified via e-mail by the end of the work day on Friday, March 23, 2018.

What is an artist statement?

An artist statement is a paragraph written by the artist that describes his or her artwork. It might include details about the inspiration for the artwork or the reason that it fits within the given exhibition theme. It may include why the artist enjoys art or their goals as an artist. The artist’s statement is not required, but will allow jurors a better understanding of the artist’s intent. Please keep statements under 100 words.

Will Student’s Get Their Artwork Back?

Yes! Artwork will be available for pick-up beginning Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Local artwork from schools in Midland, Texas may be delivered to the school at the request of the teacher.
