Barnaby Fitzgerald - North
Dallas-based artist Barnaby Fitzgerald is a professor of painting at Southern Methodist University who divides his time between teaching and painting in the United States and painting and video work in Togo, West Africa and Umbria, Central Italy. Moments, Still Lives and Figures reflects Fitzgerald’s main activities, which are small panels in tempera and large oils whose subject matter is still lives, spaces, and figures in interiors.

“Making images by hand is motivated by my eye’s mind. Yes, the eye has its own mind, which is fearlessly open to concepts, while it has luxuriated in visual sensations from early antiquity onwards. When I paint I am transported to a distant future, when all our own current worries will be silenced and we will muse as we have, secretly, all along. A time when our intellect may contemplate logical predicaments together with their cradle: the magic of beauty.”
