A Day at the Races 2017
Saturday, May 6 | 4 to 7 pm
Come join us for the 143rd “Run for the Roses” and “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports!” Ladies, wear your biggest hats and gentlemen, don your colorful bow ties as we celebrate Derby Day in Midland. The Museum of the Southwest will host A Day at the Races from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 6. The outdoor event is inspired by the equestrian pursuits of the Turner, Durham and Scharbauer families, their two Kentucky Derby-winning horses, Tomy Lee (1959) and Alysheba (1987), and their prized Kentucky Derby Trophies.
Enjoy Southern-style fare and refreshments, play croquet or horseshoes with your friends on the grounds of the historic Turner Mansion, watch the Kentucky Derby race and experience the history of the Mansion through the Turner Legacy Galleries. These galleries are devoted to the story of Midland, the history of the house and the relationship between the Turner family and the Kentucky Derby. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will go toward the Museum's Collection Care Fund to help cover costs related to conservation and repair of works of art in the Museum’s permanent collection.
