SPECIFIC TOURS

Sculpture Park and Museum Grounds:
Join us on a tour of the Museum of the Southwest's Sculpture Park. It is an extraordinary place where visitors can delight in an array of inspiring works by some of the Southwest's most accomplished sculptors. Within the Museum's five acres of lush grounds, the Sculpture Park is an outdoor center for art education, experienced by thousands of visitors each year. Along with viewing the sculptures and learning about art and artists, visitors can enjoy shaded areas for picnics before or after the tours.

Myths and Legends:
Come hear about the wonderful Myths and Legends represented by some of the sculpture pieces on the grounds of the Museum. In this tour we will hear the stories, and see the artists' interpretation of these stories.
Join us to learn of the Legend of the Sacred Pipe, the Legend of the Hopi Naming ceremony, and the story of of the legendary Mary Ann Goodnight and the tale of her saving the American Bison from extinction. Fun and interesting to hear, find out what was the inspiration for some of the sculpture pieces at the Museum of the Southwest.

Karl Bodmer's Journey Through America:
From 1833 to 1834, Prince Maximilian of Weid (1782-1867), a German naturalist and explorer, and Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), a Swiss painter and illustrator, made an historic journey up the Missouri River. their mission was to gather and record information about the American environment and native peoples. Works produced by both this scholar and this artist are recognized as primary resources on the rich cultures of the Northern Plains Indians. (Outreach Trunks are available to check out for pre-tour educational information and preparation to have in your classroom)

The Turner Mansion:
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Fred and Juliette Turner Mansion is one of the last residential commissions of the prolific Texas architect, Anton F. Korn, Jr. The 5,309 square foot original home was constructed from 1936-1937 on 12 contiguous lots for Mr. Turner, his wife and two daughters. The architecture is a stylistic adaptation of the Eclectic movement, which drew its style from diverse architectural traditions.
