Contemporary Art From The Collection of the Museum of the Southwest
May 2 - July 26, 2009
This exhibit focuses on paintings, prints, photographs and works on paper from the MSW's collection acquired in the last ten years. The exhibition showcases the collection's depth and range with works by artists such as Keith Carter, Dan Blagg, Daniel Chadbourn, Woody Gwyn, David Bates, Gregg Skoll, and Fritz Scholder to mention a few.
The exhibit highlights the Museum's commitment to acquire a wide variety of contempory art from the Southwest with an emphasis on Texas and New Mexico. While the collection features art work that is easy to understand, other pieces will be challenging. The Museum seeks to build a collection for the community which reflects all the important styles of today.
The focal point of this exhibition will be the Museum's first-time showing of a rare collection of ten Agnes Martin (1912-2004) prints given to the Museum in 2007 by an anonymous collector. Agnes Martin was a Canadian-born American painter who became well known in the mid-1970's for her sparse canvases of geometric lines and grids. In the 1950's she settled in Taos, N.M. Martin is considered to be one of the greatest abstractionists of the 20th century.
